Beyond Gergeti: 5 places to discover around Kazbegi

Gergeti Trinity Church may be the image most people associate with Kazbegi, but there is much more to explore beyond the famous hilltop church. From quiet valleys and waterfalls to high mountain villages, the area around Stepantsminda is full of places worth taking the time to discover.

1.Juta Valley

About 2,200 metres above sea level, Juta is a small mountain village at the end of the Sno Valley. From here, a walking trail leads towards the Chaukhi Massif, with its striking rocky peaks and open alpine landscapes. The route to the base of the massif is around 4 km and takes about 1.5 hours, making it accessible even if you are not an experienced hiker.

Why go: For wide mountain views, fresh air and an easy escape into the high Caucasus.

2.Truso Valley

Truso feels different from the landscapes around Stepantsminda. The valley is known for its mineral springs, travertines, historic ruins and abandoned settlements, creating a landscape where nature and traces of the past sit side by side. It is also one of the easier hiking areas around Kazbegi.

Why go: For a slower walk through one of the region’s most unusual valleys.

3.Gveleti Waterfalls

Just a short drive from Stepantsminda, Gveleti is home to two waterfalls - Big and Small Gveleti. The trail takes you through the Dariali Valley, along streams and beneath steep mountain cliffs before reaching the waterfalls.

Why go: For a short nature walk and a refreshing change of scenery.

4.Sno Valley

Sno is a quiet mountain village about 8 km from Stepantsminda, surrounded by the peaks of the Caucasus. The village has its own historic character, including Sno Fortress, a small stone fortification overlooking the valley.

Why go: For a quieter side of Kazbegi and a glimpse into the region’s mountain villages.

5.Dariali Gorge

Following the Tergi River towards the Georgian-Russian border, Dariali Gorge is one of the most dramatic landscapes in the area. Steep mountains, waterfalls and the river make the drive through the gorge an experience in itself. The Dariali Monastery Complex is also located here, surrounded by the mountains and valley.

Why go: For dramatic scenery, a peaceful monastery and one of the most striking mountain roads in the region.

The best part of exploring Kazbegi is that you do not have to choose between nature, history and adventure. You can spend a morning visiting Gergeti, take a longer trip to Juta or Truso, stop by a waterfall, and still return to Stepantsminda for a quiet evening in the mountains.
