City Guide
Standing above the historic district of Akhaltsikhe, Rabati Castle is one of southern Georgia’s most remarkable landmarks. Its history dates back to the 9th century, when the fortress was known as Lomsia. It later developed into an important political and administrative centre under the Jakeli rulers of Samtskhe.
Today, the restored complex brings together a citadel, historic churches, a mosque, a madrasa, a former palace and the Samtskhe-Javakheti History Museum. Its distinctive architecture reflects the different cultures and communities that have shaped the region over the centuries.
Wander through the stone courtyards, explore the historic buildings and enjoy views across Akhaltsikhe from the upper fortress. Rabati is an excellent starting point for discovering the history and cultural diversity of Samtskhe-Javakheti.
