City Guide
Tucked away in a wooded valley near Akhaltsikhe, Sapara Monastery is one of the region’s most atmospheric historical sites. The monastery dates back to the early medieval period and became closely associated with the powerful Jakeli family, who ruled Samtskhe for centuries.
The complex includes several churches, a bell tower, monastic buildings and remnants of former fortifications. Its most notable structure is the Church of St. Saba, built in the late 13th or early 14th century. Inside, visitors can discover historic frescoes that preserve the artistic traditions and religious heritage of medieval Georgia.
Beyond its architectural significance, Sapara is memorable for its secluded setting. Surrounded by wooded slopes and rugged cliffs, it offers a quieter experience than the region’s more famous attractions and provides a glimpse into Georgia’s spiritual and cultural past.
