City Guide
Overlooking the Mtkvari River near Atskuri village, this imposing medieval fortress once played an important role in defending the approaches to southern Georgia and the Borjomi Gorge. Built on steep, difficult terrain, it took advantage of the natural landscape to create a formidable defensive position.
The fortress developed over several centuries and was repeatedly damaged by warfare and earthquakes. Its surviving walls and ruins reveal different stages of construction, reflecting the strategic importance of this route throughout Georgian history.
Unlike extensively restored castles, Atskuri retains a rugged, atmospheric character. Its elevated position and dramatic surroundings make it particularly appealing to travellers interested in medieval history, ancient fortifications and lesser-known landmarks.
