City Guide
Located in the picturesque Kvabliani Valley, Zarzma Monastery is one of the outstanding religious and architectural landmarks of Samtskhe-Javakheti. Its origins are traditionally traced to the 8th–9th centuries and are associated with the Georgian monk Serapion of Zarzma.
The present main church and its impressive bell tower date largely to the early 14th century, reflecting the monastery’s importance during the rule of the Jakeli family. Inside, historic wall paintings preserve portraits of regional rulers and other figures, offering a glimpse into the political and artistic life of medieval Samtskhe.
Set against a backdrop of green hills, the monastery is as rewarding for its tranquil surroundings as for its architecture. It is an excellent destination for travellers interested in Georgian religious heritage, medieval art and the quieter landscapes beyond Akhaltsikhe.
