City Guide
Vanis Kvabebi, meaning “Caves of Vani,” is a medieval cave monastery set into the rocky landscape of the Mtkvari Gorge. Its origins date back to the early medieval period, and the complex developed over several centuries as a secluded religious community.
The site features numerous caves arranged across the cliff face, along with churches, passageways and remnants of monastic buildings. A small white-domed church stands out against the rugged rock, creating one of the area’s most distinctive sights.
Unlike the larger and more famous Vardzia complex, Vanis Kvabebi often feels quieter and more remote. Its unusual architecture and dramatic setting make it a rewarding addition to a historical road trip through southern Georgia.
