City Guide
Tmogvi Fortress stands on a rugged rocky ridge overlooking the Mtkvari River, close to the famous Vardzia cave monastery. First mentioned in historical sources in the 10th century, it occupied a strategic position along an important route through southern Georgia.
Its defensive walls follow the natural contours of the cliff, while the remains of towers, caves and other structures reveal how the fortress used the landscape for protection. Over the centuries, Tmogvi witnessed political struggles and changes of power that shaped the history of the region.
Today, the ruins reward adventurous visitors with a sense of the area's medieval past and expansive views across the gorge. The site is less developed than major tourist attractions, making it especially appealing to travellers interested in history, hiking and off-the-beaten-path destinations.
