City Guide
Tavkvetula Cave Church is a lesser-known religious landmark carved into a high cliff overlooking the Mtkvari River valley. Dating to the 8th-9th centuries, the church is an example of the early Christian cave architecture found throughout southern Georgia.
Its secluded position and unusual setting distinguish it from larger, more frequently visited monuments in the area. The site remains connected to local religious traditions, with believers gathering here annually on 11 September to commemorate the beheading of John the Baptist.
For visitors interested in discovering the lesser-known side of Samtskhe-Javakheti, Tavkvetula offers a fascinating combination of history, spirituality and dramatic scenery.
