City Guide
Sakanape Fortress, also known as Tsriokhi Fortress, stands near Atskuri village in a landscape shaped by steep hills, forested slopes and historic travel routes. The fortress served an important defensive purpose, helping protect the route between Imereti and Meskheti.
Although the structure now survives mainly as ruins, its strategic position offers insight into the network of fortifications that once protected the region. Nearby strongholds could communicate warnings of approaching danger, making these hilltop sites important parts of the area's medieval defence system.
The fortress is best suited to travellers interested in lesser-known historical sites and outdoor exploration. Its remote setting offers a different experience from the restored monuments of Rabati and Vardzia.
