City Guide
Located on the shores of Paravani Lake in the Javakheti highlands, Poka Monastery is closely associated with St. Nino, who, according to Georgian tradition, rested here on her journey to bring Christianity to the kingdom of Kartli.
The historic church dates to the 11th century and is distinguished by its stone architecture, ornamented doors and windows, and surviving fragments of interior decoration. A memorial obelisk stands nearby, commemorating the place associated with St. Nino’s journey.
A monastic community was re-established here in the late 20th century. Today, visitors may also find locally made products, including cheese, chocolate, preserves and handicrafts, depending on availability.
With its spiritual heritage and expansive lake views, Poka is a rewarding stop for travellers exploring the cultural and natural landscapes of Javakheti.
