Jvari Monastery

Jvari Monastery is one of Georgia’s most iconic historical and religious landmarks. Perched on a hill above Mtskheta, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the ancient city and the meeting point of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers.

The monastery dates back to the 6th century and is closely connected to St. Nino, who played a central role in bringing Christianity to Georgia. Its elegant cross-domed design became an important influence on Georgian medieval architecture. Jvari is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Historical Monuments of Mtskheta.

Tip:

• Visit in the morning or late afternoon for beautiful light and the best views over Mtskheta. Comfortable shoes are recommended, as the monastery is located on a hill.

Fun Fact

• The name “Jvari” means “Cross” in Georgian. According to tradition, St. Nino erected a large wooden cross on this hill in the 4th century.
