Zedazeni Monastery

Perched on the Saguramo Range near Saguramo Village, Zedazeni Monastery is one of Georgia’s oldest monasteries, founded in the 6th century by St. Ioane Zedazneli, one of the Thirteen Syrian Fathers who came to Georgia to spread Christianity.

The monastery was built on the site of a former pagan sanctuary dedicated to Zaden, a deity associated with fertility and abundant harvests. The complex today includes the historic John the Baptist Basilica, a bell tower, vestibule, defensive walls, and the remains of a later fortress. St. Ioane Zedazneli is also buried on the monastery grounds.

Surrounded by beautiful hornbeam and beech forests, Zedazeni offers a peaceful escape from the city and a chance to experience both Georgia’s spiritual heritage and its natural landscapes.

Tip:

• The monastery can be reached by a paved mountain road, but adventurous visitors can also hike through the surrounding forest. If you choose the hiking route, bring comfortable shoes and water, and take some time to enjoy the forest views and natural spring along the way.

Fun Fact:

• Zedazeni Monastery takes its name from Zaden, the pagan god whose sanctuary once stood on the site. The monastery’s annual celebration, Zedaznoba, takes place on May 20 and commemorates St. Ioane Zedazneli and the Thirteen Syrian Fathers.
