City Guide
Perched high above Stepantsminda, Gergeti Trinity Church is one of Georgia’s most recognizable mountain landmarks. Built in the 14th century at around 2,170–2,200 metres above sea level, the church sits against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Kazbek.
Getting there is part of the experience: you can hike uphill from Stepantsminda or take a local 4x4. Once at the top, take your time to walk around the church and enjoy the panoramic views of the valley and Caucasus peaks.
Fun fact: During periods of invasion, the church was used to safeguard important religious treasures, including the Cross of Saint Nino. Inside, you can also find unusual icons associated with good and bad weather.
Try this: Visit early in the morning for softer light, fewer people and a better chance of seeing Mount Kazbek clearly.
