Ananuri Fortified Castle

Standing on the banks of the Aragvi River, Ananuri is one of Georgia’s best-preserved historical complexes and a spectacular first stop on the journey towards the mountains. The fortress once belonged to the powerful Aragvi Eristavi feudal family, who controlled important routes through the region.

The complex grew between the 14th and 18th centuries and combines military, religious and residential architecture. Inside the fortified walls you can discover upper and lower fortifications, towers, three churches, a bell tower and other historic structures.

One of its most striking features is the Church of the Assumption (Ghvtayeba), famous for its beautifully carved stone façade and detailed decorative elements. The fortress also offers an incredible view over the emerald-blue waters of Zhinvali Reservoir, making it one of those places where history and scenery come together.

Fun Fact: King Erekle II considered Ananuri one of the seven strongest fortresses in Georgia. After his defeat at the Battle of Krtsanisi, he took refuge here.

Explore the fortress and churches, then walk down towards Zhinvali Reservoir for photographs. You can also stop by the lakeside for a picnic or, when available, rent a boat.
