Metekhi

Metekhi is a historic district on a rocky outcrop on the left bank of the Mtkvari River in Avlabari, Tbilisi . It was the earliest settlement on the city's territory. According to traditional belief, King Vakhtang I Gorgasali built a church ( Metekhi Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary ) and a fortress here, which also served as the king's residence. This is where the name Metekhi comes from.

In this place, in the 5th century, the martyr St. Shushanik was buried. According to tradition, the Metekhi rock was supposed to be the place of martyrdom of St. Abo Tfileli (8th century), who is the patron saint of Tbilisi.

The Metekhi area is connected to the opposite bank of the Mtkvari River by a reinforced concrete bridge, which was built in 1951 to replace two old bridges.

The views from the Metekhi Church extend over Old Tbilisi, Narikala Fortress, Abanotubani, the Bridge of Peace, and Rike Park. These places are the face of Old Tbilisi.
