Tsdo Village

Perched high above the Tergi River, Tsdo is one of the smallest and most remote villages around Kazbegi. The village is just a few kilometres from Stepantsminda, yet its quiet mountain setting feels worlds away from the busy tourist centre.

According to Georgia’s 2014 census, only 17 people lived in Tsdo. A more recent 2024 study reports that only three permanent residents remain today, making Tsdo a fascinating glimpse into the changing life of Georgia’s highland villages.

The village has a long history of mountain settlement. Archaeological and landscape research has documented old stone structures, terraced fields and the remains of what may have been a small fortification or watchtower above the village.

Today, Tsdo is less about ticking off a famous monument and more about experiencing a disappearing way of life, traditional mountain architecture and extraordinary Caucasus scenery.
