Hidden deep in the Truso Valley, Zakagori Fortress is one of the most atmospheric historical sites around Kazbegi. The fortress stands at around 2,200 metres above sea level, surrounded by rugged mountains and overlooking the valley. It is approximately 32 km from Stepantsminda.
The journey to Zakagori is as memorable as the fortress itself. Along the way, travellers pass abandoned mountain villages, mineral springs, colourful travertine formations and the dramatic landscapes of Truso Valley. The area can be explored by 4x4 vehicle, horseback or on foot. Today, the fortress is largely preserved as ruins, but its location gives you a strong sense of how important these mountain fortifications once were. It was positioned along an important route through the Caucasus and formed part of the defensive landscape of the valley.

Zakagori sits at roughly 2,200 metres above sea level - so you're exploring a medieval fortress at an altitude higher than many European mountain towns.
