Perched on Ukimerioni Hill overlooking Kutaisi, Bagrati Cathedral stands as one of Georgia's most significant medieval monuments. Commissioned by King Bagrat III in the early 11th century, the cathedral symbolized the unification and strength of the Georgian kingdom. Although it suffered extensive damage during the 17th century, it has since been carefully restored while preserving its historical importance.
Today, visitors come to admire its elegant architecture, peaceful surroundings, and sweeping views of Kutaisi and the Rioni River. The cathedral remains an important place of worship as well as one of the country's most recognizable cultural landmarks. Its hilltop location makes it especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset, when the city is bathed in warm golden light.
Bagrati Cathedral was completed in 1003, making it one of Georgia's finest examples of medieval architecture and a lasting symbol of the country's unity.
