Located near the town of Chiatura in the picturesque Kvirila River Valley, Mghvimevi Monastery is one of the most distinctive monastery complexes in western Georgia. Founded in the 13th century, the monastery is partially carved into a natural limestone cave, creating an extraordinary setting where architecture and nature exist in perfect harmony.
The complex includes the Church of the Savior, a beautiful two nave basilica adorned with intricate stone carvings and medieval frescoes. At the far end of the cave stands the small Church of St. Catherine, built directly into the rock face, while numerous smaller caves surrounding the monastery were once used by monks for prayer and shelter. The peaceful atmosphere, dramatic cliffside location, and impressive craftsmanship make Mghvimevi one of Imereti's most memorable spiritual landmarks.
The name Mghvimevi comes from the Georgian word "mghvime," meaning "cave." The monastery was built around a vast natural cave that stretches approximately 35 meters into the limestone cliff, giving it one of the most unusual settings of any monastery in Georgia.
