Nestled in the village of Ubisa near Kharagauli, Ubisa Monastery is one of western Georgia's finest examples of medieval religious architecture. Founded in the 9th century by followers of Saint Grigol Khandzteli, the monastery has remained an important spiritual and cultural landmark for more than a thousand years.
The monastery is especially admired for its magnificent 14th century frescoes painted by the renowned artist Damiane. Covering the interior walls and ceilings, these vibrant paintings are among the best preserved examples of medieval Georgian religious art. Behind the church stands a distinctive four story defensive tower that once served both practical and religious purposes.
