Martinitoren

Standing proudly beside the Grote Markt, the Martinitoren has watched over Groningen for centuries and remains the city’s tallest building. Known locally as ‘d’Olle Grieze’ — the Old Grey One — the tower can be climbed to enjoy panoramic views across the city and the surrounding countryside. Along the way, visitors pass historic ornaments, massive bells and the vaulted spaces of the adjoining Martini Church. The climb takes nearly 300 steps, but the views from above make the effort worthwhile.

Tip:

Wear comfortable shoes and allow around an hour for the climb, especially if you want to stop at the viewing levels along the way.

At 97 metres, the Martinitoren is still the tallest building in Groningen and has survived fires, lightning strikes and even the threat of collapse over its 500-year history.
