Shuamta Monastery

Shuamta Monastery is a medieval Georgian Orthodox monastery complex located near Telavi. It consists of Old Shuamta, built in the 5th–6th centuries, and New Shuamta, from the 16th century, set on a scenic hill overlooking the Alazani Valley. Surrounded by cypress and oak trees, the monasteries’ stone walls, arches, and bell towers offer a serene atmosphere and excellent photography opportunities.

Shuamta played an important role in the region’s spiritual life and is a fine example of Kakheti’s religious architecture. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views, tranquil walking paths, and the chance to experience the peaceful environment of a historic Georgian monastic site.
